The unique and fascinating seahorses are together with their closely related pygmy seahorses and dwarf pipehorses part of the sub family Hippocampinae within the family of pipefishes and seahorses (Syngnathidae, order: Syngnathiformes).

A pygmy seahorse (Hippocampinae denise) on a gorgonia (Melithaea spp.), shortly before it gets discamouflaged by the underwater photographer Mihály Bobály.

The photo was taken in a depth of 30 m just below the legendary Liberty Wreck in Tulamben where three(!) different species of pygmy seahorses could be discovered already.
